With his new, $100,000 Future Generation Art Prize, Ukrainian steel magnate and art super-patron Victor Pinchuk is more democratic than most, issuing an "open call" for artists to enter the competition (In an interview with Bloomberg, Pinchuk reveals that he was inspired by the ethos of Takashi Murakami’s GEISAI Museum fair, for which he has served as a judge). Applications -- and thousands should pour in -- go online on Jan. 18, 2010, at www.futuregenerationartprize.org. As far as we can tell, no application fee is required. In addition, some 100 nominators are to suggest candidates for the award
The prize is designed to support "a generation of emerging artists," and so is restricted to artists aged 35 and under. In addition to the $100,000 grand prize, five $20,000 artist-in-residency awards are planned. Strangely, the competition calls for four "mentor artists" -- Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami -- to give "counsel and support" to prizewinners.
The scheme calls for works by group of shortlisted artists to go on view at the Pinchuk Art Centre in October, and a winner of the main prize to be selected by an international jury in December 2010. The award is overseen by a board that includes, along with the four mentor artists, Eli Broad, Dakis Joannou, Elton John, Miuccia Prada, Guggenheim Museum director Richard Armstrong, Museum of Modern Art director Glenn D. Lowry, Alfred Pacquement of the Pompidou Centre, and Tate head Nicholas Serota.

About the Residency:
Several of the 08-09 Aferro Studio residents have commented that the chance for informal networking with peers afforded by residency in the
building was one of the best aspects of their experience. Also mentioned by residents consistently as a unique and valuable aspect of
the program was temporary ownership of a platform to interact with the public.
Residents will be awarded a 1200-2000 sq ft studio for 6 months, with 24 hr access, access to visiting curators and other gallery directors,
a solo exhibition in our project space, and inclusion in an end-of-program catalog highlighting their work over the length of the
residency. The current Aferro building can accommodate up to 5 artists at a time. Artists will be selected on the basis of quality of work,
commitment to their field, and ability to interact positively with the community at large. The program will aim for a mix of Newark and
non-Newark residents.
The Studios
Studios range in size from 1200 to 2000 square feet. The studios are strictly work only spaces. The studios are raw spaces with minimal
amenities. Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio. 6-month slots are available beginning

$225 a month per studio covers all utilities.

Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan India and its branches in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune are celebrating their 50th anniversaries during winter and spring 2009/2010. In the course of these five decades, numerous exciting long-term co-operations and cultural projects have been initiated.
In order to celebrate this occasion and to thank its past, current and future partners in India, Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan India will take the opportunity to launch a special grant programme to support the development of several new cultural projects. Projects may refer to all fields of culture, such as music, dance, theatre, film, literature, fine arts, new media. Interdisciplinary concepts are very welcome.
The programme consists of grants for up to 10 projects totaling an amount of INR 60,00,000. Proposals must show a reference to Germany or German culture. Jury members from India and Germany will take a decision on the winners. Winners will be notified before 28 February 2010.
Institutions as well as individual artists are invited to send their proposals including a concept, a budget, samples of previous works and a CV by Email before 31 December 2009.

round of artist auctions. For anyone interested in submitting, you can
find the details below:
The new auctions include a curated selection of works of art by
promising emerging talent. The auction is a showcase before an
audience of collectors, dealers, museum professionals and gallery
owners. To ensure equal and fair representation all works are
presented with reserves set at $200.
iGavel is an international network of fine art and antiques
professionals with Consignment Centers conveniently located in many
major metropolitan areas. Our regional network enables consignors to
minimize handling and shipping expenses while reaching an
international marketplace of buyers.
Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. To submit you must
meet the following requirements:
- Undergraduate student works will not be accepted
- All mediums are welcome besides installation works
- Artists cannot have gallery or commercial representation
- Some prior exhibition or publication experience is required
To submit, please fill out this form. Submit one image per work.
Images must be at least 800 pixels on the longest side, jpeg saved for
web, below 200kb in size, and SRGB color space. Each artist will be
required to sign a contract with iGavel. Artists receive a 50%
commission on all sold works. Shipping of accepted works to iGavel or
the iGavel Associate is the responsibility of the artist, and the
return shipment if not sold. After your submission is received, you
will be contacted by email.

For my super creative readers, there are two websites devoted to reducing the stigma of mental illness through the arts that I think you should know about.
The first is Little Episodes. They produce anthologies, special events, and online galleries of writing, artwork, music and video that help to raise awareness for people who suffer from depression, addiction or other mental illness. If you'd like to submit material to Little Episodes, click here for the guidelines and process to do so.
The second is Divinest Sense, which is a new journal/blog that also will feature the creative writing and graphic art of people with mental illness. The site will feature poems, short stories and personal essays. Meg LeDuc, its founder, welcomes submissions of personal essays from those who currently have or have had perinatal mood or anxiety disorders. You can email her at divinestsense.media@gmail.com.
